This week, we discussed emerging technologies and their impact on online and open education, with a focus on artificial intelligence. We went into breakout rooms to discuss several questions as a group and added our ideas to a shared document.

What Is an LLM?

An LLM is a large language model, which is a type of artificial intelligence that can understand and generate human-like text. LLMs power popular chatbots such as ChatGPT and allow users to ask questions, receive explanations, summarize information, and generate written content.

What Has Been the Impact of LLMs on Your Experience?

LLMs have had a positive impact on my learning experience because they allow me to ask questions and receive explanations quickly. They can help explain complex topics by breaking them down into smaller and more manageable parts. They are also useful for reviewing material before exams and quizzes, brainstorming ideas, and creating outlines for assignments. However, it is still important to check the information they provide because their answers may not always be accurate.

What Have Been the Policies in Your Classes?

Artificial intelligence policies have varied between my classes. Some instructors allow students to use AI for brainstorming, learning support, and improving their understanding of course material. Other instructors place stricter limits on its use to maintain academic integrity and ensure that students complete their own work. Because every instructor has different rules, students need to carefully read the AI policy for each course and ask questions when the expectations are unclear.

How Have These Policies Impacted Your Approach to Learning?

These policies have affected my approach to learning in several ways. One concern is that instructors may believe a student used AI on an assignment when they completed the work themselves. At the same time, AI tools can support learning when they are used responsibly. Chatbots can break difficult concepts into smaller steps, help students study for exams, and assist with creating assignment outlines. Overall, I think AI can be a valuable learning tool, but students need to understand the rules of each course and make sure that AI supports their learning rather than replacing their own thinking and work.
